I have been notified by Mr. Munesuke Yamamoto that the zen Buddhist monk’s family name is Obara not Ohara. Also, I’ve been told that those monks are reciting sutras for not just those who died in the earthquake and tsunami but for things that were destroyed (i.e. buildings, trees, roads) as well. It’s RIP for every object that lost their original shapes. I’m not sure this is whether Japanese or Buddhist way of thinking about things. Or, maybe both. In either way, many westerners might think odd, so I thought it’s worth noting about it.
